Roatan sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and the diving here is the reason a lot of visitors become residents (ask us how we know). These are the sites we find ourselves recommending over and over -- not a definitive top-ten from a magazine, just the ones that keep delivering.
Our repeat-visit favorites
- Mary's Place -- The famous one, and it earns it: deep volcanic crevices you drift through single file, walls on both shoulders, light pouring down from above. Book it early in your trip in case conditions shift.
- El Aguila wreck -- A 200-plus-foot cargo ship sunk as an artificial reef in the late '90s, now busy with groupers and garden eels. An easy, photogenic wreck dive for newer divers.
- Blue Channel -- Shallow, winding, and full of life; swim-throughs without the squeeze. Great as a second-tank dive when you want playful instead of deep.
- West End Wall -- The classic Roatan drop-off experience. Hover over the blue, watch the wall disappear beneath you, and remember why you got certified.
- Hole in the Wall -- A sandy chute that funnels you out over deep water. The name undersells the moment.
- The house reef, honestly. The reef right off West Bay Beach is a legitimate dive-and-snorkel site. On calm mornings we'd put it against many islands' boat dives.
Conditions pick the site as much as you do -- crews call the day's dives based on wind and swell. Tell the shop what's on your wish list on day one and they'll usually find a way to get you there during your stay.
New to diving? Roatan is the place to start
Warm water, mild currents on the leeward side, short boat rides, and instructors who teach all day every day: it's one of the best-value places anywhere to get certified. Our full beginner's guide to diving Roatan walks through courses, costs, and what to expect on day one.
Reef manners
Reef-safe sunscreen only, hands off everything, and perfect your buoyancy before you perfect your photography. The reef is the whole show here -- locals notice divers who treat it that way, and dive crews remember them kindly.
