"Where should we eat?" is the first question almost every guest asks when they arrive at Casa Mañana. It's a great question, because the dining scene across West Bay and West End has gotten genuinely impressive. Within a 20-minute radius you can find Texas-style BBQ, fresh-catch Caribbean seafood, authentic Thai food, and some of the best pizza you'll eat anywhere.

West End Favorites

1. Sandy Buns Bakery & Cafe

Location: West End Road, near Half Moon Bay  |  Price: $-$$  |  Payment: Cash, Venmo

If you only eat at one place in West End, make it Sandy Buns. Run by Tim and Shantal — a couple of Texan expats who brought serious BBQ skills to the island — this bakery-cafe has become the runaway #1 restaurant in West End, and it's not even close. The cinnamon rolls are legendary (people line up for them), and the smoked brisket might genuinely be better than what you'd find in Austin. Everything is made in-house, from the bread to the smoked meats.

What to order: The Dirty Bird chicken sandwich, a cinnamon roll (non-negotiable), and the sweet potato garlic aioli fries. The portions are Texas-sized — one meal is big enough to share between two people. Hours: Mon-Fri 8am-3pm, Sat 8am-2pm & 4-8pm. Closed Sundays. Come early — there are only 10-12 tables and lunch gets packed.

2. Ginger's Caribbean Grill

Tucked into a beautiful alcove on Half Moon Bay, Ginger's is where we go for sunset appetizers and fresh seafood. Owners Jeff and Ginger source their fish directly from local fishermen — only sustainable catches make it onto the menu. The setting is gorgeous: beach chairs during the day, waterfront tables at sunset, and a bar that doubles as a community hangout with live music and sports.

What to order: The bang bang shrimp is addictive. The lionfish tacos are a must-try — lionfish are invasive to the reef, so eating them is literally helping the ecosystem. The seafood-stuffed jalapeños and coconut shrimp are also excellent. Beach chairs are complimentary when you order food or drinks.

3. Sundowner's Beach Bar

Sundowner's is the beating heart of West End. This is the largest and most popular bar on the island, planted right on the beach with what might be the best sunset view in all of Roatán. The food is solid — tacos, seafood, burgers — but you come here for the experience. Toes in the sand, cold drink in hand, live music floating through the salt air, and a sunset that demands your full attention.

The live music schedule rotates throughout the week, with different acts on different nights. If you happen to be around on a Sunday evening, swing by between 6:30 and 8:30 — you might catch a familiar face from Casa Mañana up on stage. They also run fun theme nights: Taco Tuesdays, music trivia on Thursdays, and bonfires after the music wraps up. Hours: Daily 11am-10pm. Get there by 5pm to grab a prime sunset spot.

4. Thai Blue Elephant

Real Thai food on a Caribbean island? We were skeptical too — until we ate here. Thai Blue Elephant has been serving authentic Thai cuisine on Roatán for over 16 years and has earned a TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice award. The kitchen doesn't cut corners on authenticity, and it shows. Two floors of seating plus outdoor tables overlooking the bay make this a great dinner spot.

What to order: The pad Thai is the benchmark, but the yellow curry and tom yum soup are equally good. The chicken satay and papaya salad make perfect starters. Good vegan options too. Hours: Tue-Sun 11am-9pm. Prices run $7-44 — a bit higher than other West End spots, likely because of imported ingredients, but worth it.

5. Splash Inn

Location: Half Moon Bay, West End  |  Price: $$  |  Payment: Cash and cards

Splash Inn is a PADI 5-Star dive resort in the heart of West End, but you don't need to be a guest or diver to eat here. Their open-air terrace restaurant serves solid international dishes with views over Half Moon Bay. It's a reliable, easygoing spot for lunch or dinner — the kind of place where you end up staying longer than you planned because the atmosphere is just right. Couples particularly love it.

What to order: The fresh catch and the grilled options are consistently good. The terrace bar makes solid cocktails. A free buffet breakfast is included for hotel guests, but the restaurant is open to everyone for lunch and dinner.

6. The Pizza Spots: Bigros/C Level & Junior's Patio

West End has a quiet pizza rivalry going on, and honestly? Everyone wins.

Bigros Pizzeria & C Level Pizzeria (West End Road, at Georphi's entrance) is rated 4.8 stars with a Travelers' Choice award. Their motto is "Pizza, pizza, and more pizza — that's all we do here," and they do it incredibly well. Great gluten-free options with real care taken to avoid cross-contamination. Vegan cheese available. Prices run $3-23. The owner is personable and hands-on. Open until 8:30pm.

Junior's Patio (Coconut Tree Plaza entrance) is something special. Junior makes his dough fresh every day, fires everything in a professional pizza oven, and lets you build your own pie from whatever's available. It's BYOB, cash only, and the setting — an eclectic courtyard strung with lights — is charming. Open Mon-Fri 4:30-8pm only, and you should ask us for the current number and call ahead because he books up fast. For larger groups, you can arrange a private pizza party. This is one of those "if you know, you know" spots.

7. Beachers Bar & Grill

Beachers is the real deal — a locally owned, family-run spot that's been on West Bay Beach for over 15 years (not connected to any hotel). You sit on a covered deck with beach loungers stretching to the Caribbean right in front of you. This is the kind of place where you order a drink, settle into a lounge chair, and look up three hours later wondering where the afternoon went.

What to order: Three grilled lobster tails for around $20 (with salad and mashed potatoes) — that's not a typo. The coconut shrimp and whole grilled red snapper are also excellent. Happy hour runs 2-6pm with drink specials. We send almost every guest here and nobody has ever been disappointed.

8. JavaVine Cafe & Wine Bar

Location: West Bay Beach Mall  |  Price: $-$$  |  Payment: Cash and cards

JavaVine is our morning ritual. This cafe in the West Bay Mall serves some of the best coffee on the island — espresso, cappuccinos, lattes, and their signature frappes. Here's the detail that won us over: their iced coffee ice cubes are made from coffee, so your drink never gets watered down. That's the kind of thoughtfulness that runs through everything here.

What to order: Any coffee drink (seriously, they're all good), fresh fruit smoothies, and the breakfast sandwiches or bagels. They also do gourmet pizza and tapas on Friday evenings with a wine bar — over 20 wines available. Free WiFi makes it a solid remote work spot too. Hours: Tue-Thu 7:30am-5pm, Fri 7:30am-9pm, Sat-Sun 8am-2pm. Closed Mondays.

9. Bananarama — Thirsty Turtle Bar & Grill

Location: West Bay Beach (at Bananarama Dive Resort)  |  Price: $$  |  Payment: Cash and cards

The Thirsty Turtle is the heartbeat of West Bay Beach. Located at Bananarama Dive & Beach Resort, this open-air bar and grill is right on the sand and open to everyone — you don't need to be a resort guest. Between the food, the drinks, and the nightly entertainment, it's the most energetic spot on the beach. They run a 2-for-1 happy hour from 4-6pm that's hard to resist.

What to order: The coconut shrimp and fish tacos are reliably good. The whole fried fish is excellent if you're hungry. But the real draw is the entertainment: hermit crab races (proceeds go to Familias Saludables, a local HIV prevention charity), fire dancers, karaoke, live music, quiz nights, and limbo. Something different every night.

Practical Tips for Dining in Roatán

• Cash is still king at some spots. Sandy Buns takes Venmo, Sundowner's takes Venmo and PayPal, Junior's is cash only. Beachfront restaurants generally accept cards. We recommend having some US dollars or Lempiras on hand.
• Lempiras vs. US Dollars. Most tourist-facing restaurants accept both. You'll sometimes get a slightly better rate paying in Lempiras.
• Getting between West Bay and West End. The scenic way is the water taxi — $5 per person when three or more ride together ($10 solo, $15 for two). A road taxi runs about $5-10 and takes 5-10 minutes; always agree on the price before getting in.
• Tipping. 10-15% is standard, similar to the US. Some beach restaurants add a service charge (usually 10%) — check your bill before doubling up. At smaller local spots, even a small tip is genuinely appreciated.
• Reservations. Most places are walk-in. For Junior's Patio, call ahead. During high season (December-April), popular dinner spots fill up by 7pm.
