The single biggest saving is not a coupon. It is knowing that the taxi fare quoted at the airport door and the fare on the main road four minutes away are different numbers.

The right-hand column is the point. Resident-checked means we have paid it recently. Published source means it comes from official guidance and is worth confirming if your trip depends on it. We would rather say which is which than present both as equally solid.
There are two price worlds, two hundred metres apart
A plate at a local comedor and a plate at a beachfront restaurant are different meals in every respect, including the bill. Travellers who only ever eat in the second world go home saying Roatan is expensive, and they are not wrong about their own trip.
The comedor is not a budget compromise. Baleadas for breakfast and pollo con tajadas for lunch is what most of the island eats. If you never do it, you have missed something as well as overpaid.
If you are self-catering, the arithmetic is simple: imported anything carries the island premium, local produce does not. A week of cooking from the market lands near the bottom of that grocery range. A week of cooking from your usual shopping list lands at the top of it and then some.
Transport, and the airport-door premium
The biggest single-decision saving on this island happens in the first ten minutes of your trip.
Fares quoted inside and immediately outside the terminal are the tourist rate, quoted confidently because the driver knows you have just landed and do not know the alternative. The alternative is to walk out to the main road — four minutes, on a pavement — and flag a passing cab.
This is not a hack and it is not a scam you are dodging. It is two markets operating four minutes apart. Plenty of people will reasonably decide that after eight hours of travel, in the heat, with a toddler, the door fare is worth every cent. Just decide it knowingly. Note the units in the table above: private taxis are priced per vehicle, colectivos and water taxis per person. For four people a private taxi is often cheaper and always easier. For one person it rarely is.
Why diving dominates the budget
Roatan is one of the cheapest places in the world to learn to dive, which is exactly why diving dominates a Roatan budget: it is good value, so people do a lot of it.
A two-tank boat dive runs to roughly a full comfortable day's food-and-transport budget. Open Water certification over three or four days is a meaningful slice of a week's spending. Neither is a rip-off — the same course in Florida or the Mediterranean costs substantially more — but budget for it as a real line rather than an extra. Snorkelling, by contrast, is free. In West Bay the reef is close enough to the sand that a mask and fins is the entire cost of the best thing on the island. If money is tight, that is the answer, and it is not a consolation prize.
What surprises people
- Cards are not universal. Restaurants, dive shops and supermarkets take them. Colectivos, comedores, fruit stands and water taxis do not. Assume cash under about $15.
- Lempira is the real currency. Dollars are accepted everywhere and the informal rate applied to them is quietly bad. Paying in lempira is a discount nobody advertises.
- Sunscreen and bug spray cost triple here. Bring them, especially reef-safe sunscreen, which is both expected at some sites and hard to find. See what to pack.
- Tipping is expected at 10–15%, and is often already added as servicio. Check before you double up.
- The 15% tax is frequently inside the menu price — but not always.
So is Roatan expensive?
Against the Caribbean it is marketed alongside — Turks and Caicos, Grand Cayman, Barbados — Roatan is dramatically cheaper. Not slightly: a different category.
Against mainland Central America — Guatemala, Nicaragua, the Honduran mainland an hour's flight away — Roatan is noticeably more expensive. It is an island. Everything not caught, grown or made here arrives by boat and carries the cost of the boat.
Both are true, and which one you have in your head before you arrive decides whether the island feels like a bargain or a surprise. The honest framing: you pay Central American prices for food and transport, and island prices for anything imported.
