What Makes West Bay Beach Special

If you have ever scrolled through photos of Caribbean beaches and thought they were too good to be real, West Bay Beach Roatán is the place that proves they are not. Stretching roughly a mile along the western tip of Roatán, this crescent of powdery white sand meets some of the clearest turquoise water in the entire Caribbean. It is consistently ranked among the top beaches in Central America, and once you see it in person, you will understand why.

What sets West Bay Beach apart from other world-class beaches is what lies just offshore. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second largest coral reef system on the planet — runs parallel to the coastline only 50 to 100 yards from shore. That means you can wade into waist-deep water, put on a snorkel mask, and within minutes find yourself gliding over living coral gardens teeming with parrotfish, yellowtail snappers, eagle rays, and sea turtles. No boat ride required.

The water at West Bay is remarkably calm for most of the year. The reef acts as a natural breakwater, absorbing the energy of open-ocean swells before they reach shore. The result is a gentle, almost lagoon-like swimming environment that is safe for children and non-swimmers alike. The sand slopes gradually into the sea, and visibility regularly exceeds 80 feet — ideal conditions for first-time snorkelers and experienced divers alike.

Unlike beaches on larger Caribbean islands where development has pushed nature to the margins, West Bay retains a laid-back, low-rise character. There are no towering hotel complexes blocking the view and no boardwalks crowded with souvenir shops. Instead you will find a string of beachfront restaurants, small boutique hotels, and palm-shaded stretches of sand where you can plant a chair and not see another person for 50 yards in either direction — especially if you walk toward the quieter southern end.

    Local Tip

West Bay Beach is a public beach. You do not need to be a guest at any hotel or resort to access it. Walk south past the main cluster of restaurants for the most peaceful sections. The sunsets from the southern end are extraordinary.

Best Restaurants on West Bay Beach

One of the best things to do in West Bay is eat your way along the beach. The dining scene here ranges from upscale beachfront seafood to casual toes-in-the-sand joints where you can grab a plate of fresh fish and a cold Salva Vida for under ten dollars. Here are the spots we recommend most to our guests at Casa Mañana.

    Cayuco Beach Bar

    $$ — Moderate

Right on the sand with one of the best sunset views in West Bay. Known for fresh ceviche, grilled seafood, and creative cocktails. The vibe is relaxed and social — a perfect spot for sundowners. Try the coconut shrimp.

    Beachers

    $$ — Moderate

A West Bay institution. Beachers serves up solid burgers, fish tacos, and Caribbean staples right at the water's edge. It draws a loyal mix of locals and repeat visitors. The atmosphere is lively without being overwhelming.

    Bananarama Beachfront

    $$ — Moderate

Part of the Bananarama dive resort, this open-air restaurant sits directly on the beach. The seafood platter is generous, the baleadas are authentic, and the bar pours strong. Great for a post-dive lunch.

    Infinity Bay Resort Restaurant

    $$$ — Upscale

For a more polished dining experience, Infinity Bay delivers. Their menu leans international with a Caribbean twist — think lobster tail, seared tuna, and rum-glazed ribs. The infinity pool backdrop does not hurt, either.

    Mamas Coco

    $ — Budget-Friendly

A beloved local favorite on the beach path. Mamas Coco serves generous portions of authentic Honduran and island food at prices that will make you smile. The fried fish plate and coconut rice are outstanding.

    Sundowner's Beach Bar

    $$ — Moderate

True to its name, this is where you want to be when the sun goes down. Casual beach seating, cold drinks, live music on weekends, and a menu that does the basics really well. One of our personal go-to spots.

Diving & Snorkeling from West Bay Beach

Roatán is one of the most affordable places in the world to get scuba certified, and West Bay Beach puts you right at the doorstep of world-class dive sites. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef runs so close to shore that many dive operations simply walk you into the water from the beach rather than loading onto a boat. That convenience, combined with warm water (79-84°F year-round), excellent visibility, and healthy coral formations, makes West Bay a diver's paradise whether you are earning your first Open Water certification or logging your 500th dive.

    Snorkeling from Shore

You do not need to book a tour or rent a boat to see incredible marine life at West Bay Beach. The reef begins just 50 to 100 yards offshore, and you can access it by swimming straight out from almost any point on the beach. The best snorkeling on West Bay Beach is found toward the north end, near the area between Infinity Bay and the start of the reef wall. Here the water is shallow enough to see everything clearly from the surface, but the reef drops off gradually, offering a dramatic view of the wall for those who are comfortable with deeper water.

Expect to see parrotfish, sergeant majors, blue tangs, trumpetfish, barracuda, spotted eagle rays, moray eels, and — if you are lucky — hawksbill sea turtles. Bring your own gear or rent a mask and fins from one of the beach vendors for around $10 per day.

    Scuba Diving

Several PADI-certified dive shops operate directly from West Bay Beach, making it incredibly easy to arrange everything from discover dives to divemaster training. Top shops in West Bay include Bottom Time Scuba (a boutique, owner-operated shop right next to Casa Mañana specializing in small groups with extra-long dives using steel tanks), West Bay Divers (a PADI 5-Star Resort with nearly 1,000 five-star reviews), Bananarama Dive Center (a PADI 5-Star IDC center on the beach), and Paradise Beach Divers (the only shop in West Bay offering freediving and tech diving). Popular dive sites accessible from West Bay include:

A two-tank dive typically costs $70-90, and a full PADI Open Water certification runs $300-400 — roughly half of what you would pay in many other Caribbean destinations — see how it stacks up in our Roatán vs Cozumel vs Belize comparison. For a deeper look at diving in Roatán, read our Beginner's Guide to Scuba Diving in Roatán.

    Our Recommendation

If you're staying at Casa Mañana, our neighbors Jay and Lavina at Bottom Time Scuba are literally a 10-second walk away. They run a boutique operation with small groups (8 divers max), 60-80 minute dives on steel tanks, and full concierge service. It's the most personal dive experience in West Bay — and the closest to your front door.

Water Sports & Activities in West Bay

Beyond diving and snorkeling, there are plenty of things to do in West Bay to keep you busy — or as relaxed — as you want to be. The calm, protected waters and consistent warm weather make this stretch of coastline ideal for a variety of water-based activities.

    Kayaking & Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Several beach vendors rent single and tandem kayaks as well as stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) by the hour. The calm water at West Bay makes paddleboarding easy even for beginners. Paddle along the shoreline toward West End for beautiful views, or head out over the reef to spot fish from above. SUP rentals typically run $15-25 per hour.

    Glass-Bottom Boat Tours

If you want to see the reef without getting wet, glass-bottom boat tours depart regularly from the beach. These 30- to 45-minute rides glide over the reef and give you a clear view of coral formations and tropical fish through the transparent hull. A good option for families with young children or anyone who simply prefers to stay dry.

    Parasailing & Jet Skis

For those who want more of an adrenaline rush, parasailing operators launch directly from West Bay Beach. A ride lasts about 10-15 minutes and offers breathtaking aerial views of the reef, the coastline, and the jungle-covered hills of Roatán. Jet ski rentals are also available and offer a fast, fun way to explore the coast. Expect to pay $50-70 for parasailing and $60-80 for a 30-minute jet ski rental.

    Fishing Charters

Roatán offers excellent deep-sea fishing, and charters can be arranged from West Bay. The waters off Roatán hold mahi-mahi, wahoo, yellowfin tuna, blue marlin, and sailfish depending on the season. Half-day charters start around $400 for a shared boat. Ask us at Casa Mañana and we will help set you up with a reputable captain.

    Getting Around West Bay

West Bay is compact and walkable. The beach itself stretches about a mile, and the main road running parallel to it connects all the key restaurants, dive shops, and accommodations. Here is how most people get around.

Practical Tips for Visiting West Bay Beach

A few things worth knowing before you arrive at West Bay Beach Roatán, especially if this is your first time on the island.

    Best Time to Visit

Roatán enjoys warm, tropical weather year-round. The dry season runs from roughly February through September, offering the most consistent sunshine and the calmest seas. October through January can bring occasional rain showers and slightly rougher conditions, but even the "rainy season" on Roatán typically means a quick afternoon downpour followed by blue skies. Water temperature hovers between 79°F and 84°F all year. For a detailed month-by-month breakdown, see our Best Time to Visit Roatán guide.

    What to Bring

Reef-safe sunscreen is strongly encouraged — the reef is the reason this beach is so extraordinary, and chemical sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate damage coral. Bring a good snorkel mask if you have one (rentals are available but fit can be hit-or-miss), water shoes for the rocky entry points at the north end of the beach, and a dry bag for your phone and wallet. For a complete packing list, check out our What to Pack for Roatán post.

    Safety

West Bay is one of the safest areas on Roatán. It is a well-established tourist zone with a visible security presence. Standard travel precautions apply — do not leave valuables unattended on the beach, use the safe at your accommodation for passports and extra cash, and avoid walking alone on unlit roads late at night. For a thorough discussion of safety on the island, read our honest guide: Is Roatán Safe for Tourists?

    Currency & Payments

The official currency is the Honduran Lempira, but US dollars are widely accepted throughout the island. Most restaurants and shops accept credit cards, though it is smart to carry some cash for taxis, beach vendors, and smaller local eateries. ATMs are available in West Bay and nearby West End.
